The removal of key Ergon tariffs in 2021 is expected to result in yet another significant increase in energy costs for growers. Feedback to-date with this issue is that growers are not aware of potential cost increases or solutions to reduce costs.
Results from a recent audit of 10 businesses found five out of the 10 were facing significant increases in costs ranging from $4000 to $28,740 per year. Growcom anticipates that a large percentage of Energy240 participants will save more than $2500 through simple actions such as identifying the correct energy tariffs.
The energy audit assisted in benchmarking energy efficiency on our site. Our total energy usage is forecast to reduce by 44% in 2020. Well worth the time in doing an audit given the cost savings.
Total cost savings associated with the upgrades were $142,680. This has been a helpful exercise in reducing costs and also assisting us on our road to carbon neutrality.
With planned adjustments to energy tariffs, our site energy cost was at risk of increasing by approximately $26,000 per year if not addressed. The audit provided practical advice on how to balance investment and risk and address this using a booster pump and a retrofit to existing renewable energy onsite.
