A listening ear and helping hand

Far North Queensland growers are no strangers to nature’s challenges. But when Ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper swept through in late 2023, it left damage and disruption that would rattle even the most experienced farmer.

From damaged infrastructure and waterlogged paddocks to delayed harvests and disrupted supply chains, growers are facing an uphill battle. Recovery is more than rebuilding fences—it’s about restoring confidence and getting farms (and families) ready for what comes next.

For Sarah Reynolds, agriculture isn’t just a job—it’s in her blood. Growing up on a dairy farm on the Atherton Tablelands, she’s experienced firsthand the highs and lows of farming in FNQ. She’s worn the boots, picked the fruit, and knows what it takes to farm in this region.

Now, as Growcom’s new Industry Recovery Officer, Sarah brings knowledge, passion, and empathy to help growers in the far north build towards a stronger future.

“Disaster recovery is a time of uncertainty and stress,” Sarah said. “It’s easy to feel alone. My job is to stand beside growers, listen to what they need, and connect them to the right tools, funding, and support services to get them back on track.”

“I want growers to know their concerns are heard. If I do a farm visit and learn of an issue and can connect that grower with a funding opportunity, an expert who can assist, or support services that can move things in the right direction, that’s a great outcome.”

How can Sarah help?

The Industry Recovery Program offers personalised, on-the-ground support to horticulture growers including:

  • Talking through any farm damage you’ve experienced and helping you work out what to tackle first.

  • Preparing for the future - helping you build resilience for future cyclones and weather events, so you’re less exposed and better positioned for recovery.

  • Being your listening ear - when the stress builds up, having someone to talk to who understands makes a world of difference. Sarah can also connect you with mental health and financial counselling services.

How long is support available?

Assistance is available until 30 June 2026.
