What Oz Harvest is for food, Thread Together is for clothes, making them a worthy 2019 grant recipient in Sunsuper’s Dreams for a Better World program.
Australian charity, Thread Together, connects retailers like The ICONIC and Rivers to charities including Vinnies and Anglicare to distribute their end-of-line stock to people in need. Their work is also vital in reducing the six tonne wastage Australians create every ten minutes with fashion and textiles.
Director, Greg Fisher said Thread Together is one of the most ethical solutions for retailers in response to fashion waste.
“Everybody knows about fast fashion. Everybody knows about over manufacturing. Thread Together provides a solution to deal with that excess. And that is to get on the backs of people who are doing it tough,” Greg said.
“We help people at their most vulnerable, like those who’ve recently experienced domestic violence or homelessness, or recovering from drug addiction or long term illness. We’ve helped at-risk youth, Indigenous Australians, refugees, the long-term unemployed and ex inmates – and still there are more people we can help.
“We have a national reach through an online charity partner portal, our Clothing Hubs provide an authentic retail experience in Sydney, Canberra and Adelaide and we have vans fitted out as Mobile Wardrobes to reach communities in regional South Australia.
“Our dream is to provide an authentic retail experience in every major city in the country, with a fleet of vans to visit all regional areas so more people have access to new clothes, even at their toughest time.
“We were thrilled to receive a $10,000 grant from Sunsuper’s Dreams for a Better World program. It means we can help more than 2,000 people and will be one step closer to making our dream a reality.”
Since 2011, Sunsuper’s Dreams for a Better World program has awarded more than 115 grants to community grassroots charities and small businesses to help tackle social issues affecting Australian communities, including waste, homelessness, mental health and unemployment.
Sunsuper has a long heritage of supporting regional and rural areas and through Dreams for a Better World is getting behind causes that improve people’s health, wellbeing, education and financial outcomes in regional communities.
