Latest research on the agenda for vegetable growers in Bowen (13.10.06)

Vegetable growers will have the chance to hear about the latest research in their industry at an information meeting next Wednesday 18 October in Bowen.

Organised by Growcom’s Industry Development Officer, Denise Kreymborg in association with the Bowen District Growers Association, the meeting will feature a talk by officers from the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries about current research projects. The meeting will also ask growers about what they consider to be the gaps in research and development for their crops.

The agenda will include an overview of industrial relations issues affecting horticulture growers by Growcom’s Industrial Relations Advisor, Kirsty Venning.

Issues will include workplace health and safety, the state wage case, superannuation, WorkChoice and overtime options.

“With recent WorkChoice amendments, growers now more than ever need to keep up with industrial relations changes and how they impact on their business,” said Ms Venning.

Ms Venning will be joined by Skilled Migration Advisor, Glenda Hutch, from the Department of Immigration.

Ms Hutch has been seconded to Growcom to inform horticulture growers about changes to working holiday visas, skilled migration programs, online visa verification and other relevant labour issues.

She will also discuss growers’ current needs for skilled labour.

“The Department of Immigration is eager to ensure there is a consistent, coordinated response if shortages are identified in skilled occupations which cannot be filled locally,” she said.

Both Ms Venning and Ms Hutch will have time available after the meeting to talk to individual growers if required.

The meetings are free and will be held at the Bowen DPI&F from 6.30pm with dinner and refreshments provided. Growers wishing to attend should contact Denise Kreymborg on 07 4785 2860 or 427 701 225 or by email at dkreymborg@growcom.com.au.
