Water for Profit
The Water for Profit program is Growcom Land & Water’s flagship on-farm service. The program is funded through the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Water Rural Water Use Efficiency Initiative. The Water for Profit team provides fruit and vegetable growers with practical assistance to improve irrigation efficiency, manage water quality outcomes, and fertiliser inputs plus other farm management issues. There is also a growing focus on helping growers demonstrate how their on farm management actions help address regional natural resource management (NRM) priorities. The program objectives are to: - assist growers to optimise on-farm natural resource management and water use efficiency, particularly through efficient irrigation practices
- develop and deliver a new industry program, 'Farm Management Systems' , that drives continuous improvement in farm profitability and environmental performance
- enhance the alignment of industry sustainability initiatives with regional NRM planning processes.
A team of five field officers operates in key horticultural regions across Queensland providing on-farm assistance to growers, establishing field trials, delivering training workshops, supporting the use of advanced irrigation scheduling and monitoring technologies and preparing fact sheets and management tools. Growcom's Water for Profit program is part of the Rural Water Use Efficiency Initiative. This program is a partnership between industry and government to improve the management of available irrigation water to increase the profitability and environmental sustainability of Queensland's rural industries. The Queensland Government is taking further steps to encourage irrigators to adopt more efficient water use practices with the introduction of the South East Queensland—Irrigation Futures program (SEQ-IF). The program is part of the government’s commitment — outlined in the South East Queensland Regional Plan 2005–2026—to address the needs of rural water users in the region.
SEQ-IF is modelled on the highly successful Rural Water Use Efficiency initiative which has run since 1999. Initiatives and incentives that lead to irrigators adopting more efficient water use practices will be funded for an initial period of four years, starting in 2005–06.
